PhD study and funding opportunities "German Studies" (Univ. of Warwick)

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) at the University of Warwick invites expressions of interest in its MPhil/PhD programmes in French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian, and Translation and Transcultural Studies (including a theoretical and a practice-based route), ideally by 12 November 2021.

Warwick’s SMLC is a vibrant community with an eminent national and international reputation for excellent research. The School covers French, German, Italian, Hispanic, and Translation and Transcultural Studies (including Chinese). The SMLC shares Warwick’s high international profile in terms of staff (faculty) and research students.

In the SMLC, we study Modern Languages and Cultures in a broad intellectual and global context, covering cultural, social, and intellectual history, literature, film, politics, philosophy, and translation. For doctoral research, our colleagues offer a wide spectrum of supervisory expertise in subjects ranging from the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the present day. For more information on the research expertise of our colleagues, please see https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/modernlanguages/research/expertise/ or find staff by section: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/modernlanguages/academic/.

For general information about postgraduate study at Warwick and the application process, see https://warwick.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/. You may also be interested in funding information for 2022 entry to be released by the Arts Faculty’s Centre for Arts Doctoral Research Excellence and Doctoral College.

We warmly invite expressions of interest from students who envisage applying for AHRC-funded Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M4C), Wolfson Foundation Scholarships, Warwick’s Chancellor’s International Scholarships (calls for which are expected to be announced in mid-November), or any other relevant funding opportunities. The application process is likely to involve several stages: we encourage first-rate prospective students to develop sound and robust applications through November-December 2021. Promising applicants will be invited to an online interview.

We also welcome enquiries about self-funded or externally sponsored postgraduate research and collaborative doctoral awards.

To discuss your project, please get in touch, ideally by Friday 12 November 2021, with the School Director of Graduate Studies, via pglanguages@warwick.ac.uk. We will consider slightly later expressions of interest, but timely contact will help ensure full consideration and thorough advice.
Please include a CV (detailing your academic background to date and any other relevant training), an indication of possible supervisors (where known) and a draft proposal of around 2 pages. For information and advice specifically on postgraduate opportunities in German Studies, you can also contact Prof. Elisabeth Herrmann (elisabeth.herrmann@warwick.ac.uk ) or Dr Antonia Hofstätter (antonia.hofstatter@warwick.ac.uk).

The SMLC is committed to equality and diversity.

We look forward to hearing from you!

With Caroline Parker (PG Secretary), Prof. Elisabeth Hermann and Dr Antonia Hofstätter (German Studies), Prof. David Lines (Italian Studies), Dr Mila Milani (Translation Studies) and Dr Tom Whittaker (Hispanic Studies) (SMLC PGR Admissions)
